James’s Blog: Now That’s What James Calls Worship #2.

Thank you for your patience. Here’s another little glimpse into my musical tastes.

‘Dancing in Concert with the Infinite’ by DigHayZoose.

Here’s a track from the bizarrely-named album ‘MagentaMantaLoveTree’. Now, there are twenty-two songs listed on the album, but many of them are just short samples ripped from various sources. This includes the first track, which is just a few seconds of music that sounds like it comes from an old vinyl LP or radio programme. So ‘Dancing in Concert with the Infinite’ is technically the first song on the album, despite being the second listed track. Are you with me so far? Good.

What’s the relevance of this? Well, this end up affirming something that I happen to believe – that if you’re going to start something, start it with praise. I think that’s a good habit, and it’s nice to see DigHayZoose agreeing with me by putting the only overt worship song on the album right at the beginning.

So why do I like it? Again, it’s a style of music that appeals to me. There’s a kind of funk/grunge thing going on, and who doesn’t love that opening bass/drum combo?

The lyrics wouldn’t feel out of place in many churches these days, but there’s something in this that I think is missing in much contemporary worship – there’s a Trinitarian theology that flows naturally through the whole piece. It’s just an assumed foundation. It doesn’t feel forced or even intentional. It’s just there. As with ‘Lift’, the previous entry in this series, it feels like some real thought about who God is went into this song.

I can even overlook the ridiculous fact that the song is listed as ‘Dancing in Concert with the Infinate’ on the back of the album. I think I probably care about spelling more than God does.

I give it a fairly regular listen, but I don’t think I have anywhere near the number of albums that you do.

You say that, but I probably don’t have as many now. We’ve reduced the number of CDs over the years. And I tend just to listen to the better songs that I burnt to iTunes.
