I hope you’re in the mood for some electropop. This one is by Joy Electric and is called ‘I’m Your Boy’.
This is like the previous entry (‘Always’) but even more so, in that this is not one that would even begin to work with a congregation. For starters, the title alone rules out 50% of the population being able to sing it as written.
Unlike the first three entries in this series, there’s nothing in this that can be considered ‘praise’ as such. It’s purely a declaration of commitment to God, and a fairly courageous one if you take the words seriously (When all else denies You, I’m Your boy. When the world declines You, I’m Your boy). For me, offering this pledge to God is as much an act of worship as anything else.
One of the reasons I like the Psalms is their ability to put into words the deepest stirrings of my soul when I myself am tongue-tied. It’s great to be able to borrow someone else’s creativity and think, “That’s exactly how I feel…” Just as ‘Always’ gives voice to my desire to be with God, so ‘I’m Your Boy’ gives voice to my genuine longing to be faithful and committed to Him, despite the cost.
Being truly bonded to God is not an easy or straightforward thing. Saying ‘Yes’ to God means saying ‘No’ to the alternatives that the world offers, and that’ll come back to bite you in many unexpected and unusual ways over the years. However, Joy Electric has you covered:
Have a friend who never ends,
The love He once for all began,
So jump for joy,
The party’s for the poor boys.
That idea (The party’s for the poor boys) comes straight out of the Beautitudes, and for those of us who want to follow Jesus, that’s a good place to look for hope when the world pushes back.
