James’s Blog: A Fifth of a Century.

I don’t have much to say this week, which is fine. I’ve been talking a lot recently.

All I want to announce is that, as of yesterday, Ruth and I have been married for twenty years.

I know that doesn’t sound like much to some of you, but it’s kind of a big deal to me. Not because I’m amazed that we’ve lasted this long, or anything like that. Rather, because it’s an opportunity for me to reflect, and in doing so confirm something that I’ve known for a while – namely that I’m happier with my marriage now than I was when we first started out two decades ago.

I know, just from life, that being happily married is not something to take for granted; despite what certain movies might imply, it doesn’t just happen. Ruth and I have worked at it over the years, and it’s paid off in spades. I can’t think of any twenty year project that would have been as rewarding as my marriage.

That is, in part, because I am still in love with my wife. And that is, in part, because over the past twenty years she has just become more lovable.

Anyway, thank you Ruth, and thank you for reading this far.

Normal service will be resumed next week.

Congratulations, mate. I still remember . . . enduring the train trip with Rendle and Jan.

Thanks. Twenty years is a long time to carry the burden of that particular train journey. I appreciate your sacrifice.
